Harold Tichenor began his career in the Canadian film industry in 1966 as a cinematographer and editor and soon moved on to writing and directing documentary and educational films. For the last twenty years he has primarily worked as a producer of dramatic projects, including feature films, movies for television, miniseries and television series.
In the feature film genre he served as producer on the second and third sequels of the German production The Neverending Story, as well as the Canadian feature film Showdown at Williams Creek. In addition, Harold was Consulting Producer on Gary Burns’ Kitchen Party and Executive Producer on Marine Life, directed by Anne Wheeler and starring Cybill Shepherd.
His television producing credits include the award winning films for television Other Women’s Children and After the Promise and the celebrated television series Danger Bay. In 1992 he received Gemini and ACE awards for Welcome to the Monkey House and in 1995 he was nominated for an Emmy for the CBS miniseries Children of the Dust. From 1999 to 2004, Harold was Consulting Producer for a number of Lions Gate Television projects including the television series based on Stephen King’s Dead Zone for the USA Network.
For the past six years Harold has concentrated on his work as a writer, having co-written a miniseries for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and two for CHUM/CITY. Currently Harold is writing the screen adaptation of David Bergen’s Giller Prize winning novel The Time In Between.
As a documentary filmmaker, Harold made over 100 educational and interpretive films during the 1970s and 80s. Most notably he co-wrote, directed and produced the multi award winning one-hour documentary Inupiatun: In the Manner of the Eskimo and The Snow War, one of the National Film Board’s most popular interpretive films for Parks Canada.
Harold’s commitment to the industry extends outside the office as he is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Banff Television Festival and has served on both the national and provincial Boards of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association, as well as on boards of numerous other industry associations and the Public Library Association of Alberta. He is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Banff Television Festival.
In 2002 the Hudson’s Bay Company published his book The Blanket: an Illustrated History of the Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket for Quantum Press in Toronto.
